Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox is one of the most recognizable names in cosmetic medicine. Often mistaken for a dermal filler, the injectable drug isn’t quite the same. Instead of softening features associated with aging by adding volume, Botox works by stopping the involuntary muscle movements that lead to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles.

At Medical Laser Therapeutics, you can get Botox injections to treat a specific type of wrinkle called a dynamic wrinkle. Dynamic wrinkles are wrinkles that form and deepen because of your facial muscle movements. At first, they might look particularly defined when you make certain facial expressions. Over time, you can see them even when your face is at rest.

The most common dynamic wrinkles, all treatable with Botox, are crow’s feet, frown lines, and forehead lines. In non-cosmetic settings, Botox can treat migraines, hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), eyelid spasms, and more.

How does Botox work?

Botox is able to soften your wrinkles and fine lines thanks to its active ingredient, a neurotoxin called botulinum toxin. The toxin paralyzes or weakens the muscles causing your wrinkles. Even if you can’t feel them, their constant flexing leads to the appearance of fine lines.

During your treatment at Medical Laser Therapeutics, the team member places a cold pack on your facial skin to numb the area in preparation for the injections. It takes about 10 minutes for your expert practitioner to inject small amounts of Botox into various muscles contributing to your wrinkles.

Once the procedure is complete, you can go straight home, finish running errands, or even return to work. You might notice some slight bruising or redness, but it resolves itself within two to three days.

How should I prepare for treatment with Botox?

During your consultation at Medical Laser Therapeutics, the team at Medical Laser Therapeutics can give you a detailed list of instructions for how to prepare for your Botox injections. Since the treatment is minimally invasive, you don’t need to prepare as much as you would for an invasive procedure or surgery. Your instructions may include:

  • Avoiding taking blood-thinning medications
  • Avoiding smoking
  • Arriving with clean skin
  • Rescheduling if you develop any skin irritation or rashes

Knowing exactly what to expect beforehand can help you better prepare for your appointment. Since you won’t need anesthesia, you can drive yourself to Medical Laser Therapeutics and back home again.
