There are several components to the lipid profile that are incompletely understood. Although there existence is thought to a detrimental impact on long term health their treatment is varied and in many cases unproven. These issues like homocysteine, Lp(a) and low levels of apolipoprotein A1 need to be explained and addressed jointly by the patient and provider. The importance of homocysteine states (tendency to form clots) and abnormalities in patients size also need education and treatment to prevent long term complications.
